nbeyond dot net finally after learning it by doing it July 7, 2007

I thought having my own blog would be a great idea. I found out that I could get a free blog with unlimited space in the Internet if I search. Yes, I had Google on my mind as a gmail user thinking as long as I tolerate Google robots reading the contents hoping they will not use them malicious ways, it shouldn’t be a problem for getting unlimited free blog if they do the same policy on my blog.

So, I quickly registered to have a blog in blogger.com and thought to have it that way for some times. Then, I happened to strike into JohnChow.com and learned that this John chow makes a lot of money out of his blog and recommends to have your own domain name. His argument makes a lot of sense to me so that I just bought my own domain thinking

Yes, right. Now, I have my own domain name. All I need to do is just to connect my Google blog to my own domain name.

There I found out a technical problem of creating CNAME that eventually leads to this connection of the Google blog to my own domain name. It cost some time to know with my current domain registration company there is no way of doing it. What is the alternative then?

Searching other similar blog services, I found I can link my domain name with a blog at wordpress.com if I have one blog there. Yes, I can do that. Quickly signing up, creating my new blog at wordpress.com, and importing my posts from blogger, I said “This looks fine now. Let’s now link my domain name to this.” What? This is not free. I have to pay 10 dollars per year for this. But I thought that’s still doable. So, I did it using PayPal thinking

OK. Everything is pretty much set now.

After reading some more articles from John Chow dot com, I thought that I might be going to face some situations that I need to put some ads right on my blog.

In such cases, can I do that? Yes, right. My blog is wordpress as John Chow’s is. This shouldn’t be any problem.

Guess what? It didn’t take a long until I found out this should not work because this is against wordpress.com policy. They don’t like free bloggers doing this ads things in their backyard. It’s free blog service, so don’t try to make any profit by adding ads here. Fair, enough. Then, what about the cases that I may need to put some ads on it. I had to find out another alternative. See, I am not a guy who is giving up after a couple of try. A kind of engineering spirit. Until you see or experience there is no way, just find it.

Then, how? After another some search, I found out that I need a web hosting service favorable for wordpress software meaning relatively latest versions of mysql, apache, etc…. After searching through apparently good decent web hosting companies and deciding bluehost.com for me, I could finally have my own independent blog at work in the internet. All of these have just happened in a very long day.

Well, this hustle and bustle and learning it by doing it worked out. If it works, it works. This itself I believe well deserves one post in my new home in the cyberspace. I am very much interested in knowing how this case study of my new home called blog will evolve. Let’s see.
